Reef Aquarium Algae - Limpets

About Limpets

Limpets are a round white snail-like creature that can eat nuisance algae in the reef tank. Limpets are not really a pest, but some may munch on coral.

Keyhole and Slit limpets can be identified by a little hole or slit on their shell. These species of limpets will eat soft and hard corals, and should be removed.

Limpits have sharp teeth similar to that of an urchin. Giving it the cutting power to eat most types of algae, including coraline algae.

How to Prevent Limpets

You can prevent limpets by inspecting rocks being added to your reef tank. Limpets are large enough that you will be able to spot them on most things being added to your reef tank. You may want to treat live rock outside of the tank and not add wet live rock to any aquarium. This will help prevent limpets as well as a variety of other pests from entering your reef tank.

How to Get Rid of Limpets

To get rid of limpets, you can use catch them by hand, wearing gloves, to manually remove them from the tank.

What Eats Limpets

There are no known predators for Limpets that are safe for most reef tanks. Fish such as pufferfish and triggerfish may eat Limpets, however, they will eat all invertebrates, and some coral as well.
