Green Wiry Algae (Cladophoropsis)
Last updated on November 17th, 2023
About Green Wiry Algae (Cladophoropsis)
Green Wiry Algae, also known as Cladophoropsis, is a thin wiry macroalgae that clings to rock using a runner that makes it very difficult to remove by hand.
What Causes Green Wiry Algae
Green wiry algae is often sprouted from a small piece that was on coral, shell, or rock that was added to the reef tank. Phosphates and nitrates in the reef aquarium allow this algae to continue to grow and spread in the aquarium. Unfortunately, cladophoropsis generally does not starve with the removal of these nutrients like most other algaes do.
How to Get Rid of Green Wiry Algae
Much like Grape Caulerpa, green wiry algae is dificult to remove. Your best bet is to remove as much of it as possible. You can use a tweezers and a dental pick to pick off as much of the root structure from the rock as possible.
What Eats Green Wiry Algae
It is possible for some invertebrates such as emerald crabs and urchins to eat some wiry algae. Though possible, it does not seem common, and should not be relied on as a complete solution.
