Dictyota
Last updated on November 17th, 2023
About Dictyota
Dictyota is a greenish brown macroalgae with a lettuce, or branching shelf-like like appearance that grows along the rock, making it difficult to remove.
There are many forms of dictyota. The harder to remove forms stay close to the rock and creep along the rock with branches holding them in.
What Causes Dictyota
Dictyota grows from a small piece that was on coral, rock, or a shell that was added to the reef tank. Phosphates and nitrates in the reef aquarium allow this algae to continue to grow in the aquarium, much like other algae.
How to Get Rid of Dictyota
You can remove most of the dictyota algae by hand. Any pieces that are still in the rock can be removed using a tweezers and/or a dental pick. This will help you remove the majority of the dictyota that makes it into your reef tank.
What Eats Dictyota
There are many fish and invertebrates that eat dictyota. The most popular of these are tangs, rabbitfish, turbo snails, emerald crabs, and urchins.
